After completing this subject, students will be able to understand and apply the following skills and topic areas: - the basic knowledge needed for design and assessment of members and joints in steel structures according to European standards; - the basic knowledge needed for design and assessment of members and joints in timber structures according to European standards.

Summary

1. Preface, history of steel structures, the applications, some representative structures, the production of steel, material properties of steel, tests of material, the identification of steels. 2. Limit state design, analysis of steel structures, imperfections in steel structures. 3. Classification of cross sections, tension, compression, effective buckling lengths, bending, shear, torsion, 4. Lateral-torsional stability, combination of internal forces, uniform built-up compression members, serviceability limit states. 5. Welded connections. 6. Connections made with bolts, rivets or pins. 7. Plated structural elements, effective width approaches in design, plate buckling effects due to direct stresses, resistance to shear, resistance to transverse loads, interaction, stiffeners and detailing. 8. Composite steel and concrete structures. 9. Timber structures: introduction, material properties. 10. Basics of timber carrying structure design and realization problems. 11. Timber: tension, compression, bending, shear, torsion. 12. Stability and buckling. 13. Joints in timber structures. Dowel-type fasteners. 14. Punched metal plate fastener joints. Glued joints
