Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
- student will be able to express the physical – chemical processes taking place during iron production and processes taking place during steel production in the primary aggregates representing converters, tandem furnaces and electric arc furnaces including dezoxidation and alloying, secondary metallurgy and steel casting,
- student will be able to use the basic theoretical findings and technological principles during iron and steel production,
- student will be able to use his knowledge from the field of iron and steel production in operational conditions.

Summary
The subject is focused on understanding the findings from the field of theory and technology of iron production. Attention is paid to batch materials, technological principles of production and basic processes taking place during iron production. Further the subject is focused on theoretical knowledge of processes taking place during steel production, technological principles of production in the primary steelmaking aggregates, manners of steel dezoxidation and alloying, secondary metallurgy and steel casting.

Subject syllabus:
1. Batch materials for iron production, their properties and modification. Iron ores, coke, slag-making additions, agglomeration and ore pelletization.
2. Composition of blast furnace plant, main parts of blast furnace, their function and construction.
3. Physical – chemical processes in the oxidation area of blast furnace. Usage of spare fuel during iron production.
4. Upstream of the batch and gas in the blast furnace. Production of the blast furnace and its control.
5. Reduction processes in the blast furnace. Reduction of iron oxides with the use of carbon and hydrogen, direct and indirect reduction, reduction of other chemical elements.
6. Types of iron, blast furnace slag, desulphurization in the blast furnace.
7. Alternative manners of iron production, direct reduction of iron (DRI), smelt reduction (SRI).
8. Steel production, explanation of terms, dividing of steel.
9. Steel-making slags, characterization, their task and basic dividing. Basic steel-making reactions, carbon reaction, oxidation of Si, Mn, dephosphorization, desulphurization of steel, conditions of reactions course.
10. Refractory materials at steel production, dividing, properties, characterization of basic refractory materials and their usage.
11. Steel production in oxygen converters with oxygen top and uphill blowing, combined manners of blowing, unit construction, and technology of steel production.
12. Steel production in tandem furnaces, electric arc furnaces, unit construction, technology of steel production.
13. Steel dezoxidation, task and manners of dezoxidation, steel alloying, task of ferroalloys.
14. Treatment of liquid steel during secondary metallurgy and steel casting.
