Summary

Astronomy is the science that studies phenomena beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. Specifically, it involves the study of celestial bodies, their systems, various phenomena in space, and the universe as a whole. It is divided into stellar astronomy, which deals with stars, including the Sun; research into the spatial distribution and laws governing the motions of stars and star systems; galactic astronomy, which studies the structure, components, and evolution of galaxies—primarily our own Milky Way; and extragalactic astronomy, which studies objects beyond the boundaries of our Milky Way. Planetary sciences, in turn, study the planets in our solar system and are classified as a branch of astronomy, though certain aspects of these sciences often have closer ties to the corresponding sciences concerning planet Earth. Meteor astronomy deals with the study of the motion and other properties of meteors and meteorites. Cosmology studies the universe as a whole, particularly its origin, current state, and future evolution. Specialized Knowledge: Students will acquire basic knowledge of astronomy, particularly regarding celestial bodies, their systems, motion, and evolution, and will become familiar with the main fields of astronomy, such as stellar, galactic, and extragalactic astronomy, planetary sciences, meteor astronomy, and cosmology. Professional Skills: Students are able to apply basic astronomical knowledge in describing and interpreting the properties and motions of celestial bodies and their systems, understand basic astronomical phenomena, and use specialized terminology when solving simple astronomical problems. General Competence: The student is able to independently navigate fundamental issues in astronomy, connect knowledge about the universe with other natural science disciplines, and professionally interpret basic astronomical phenomena and relationships.
