Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of the course is to provide a fundamental framework for understanding the principles underlying the creation, content, and use of cartographic products. Emphasis is placed on the geometric foundations of cartography, map projections, the principles of cartographic language, and methods of representing planimetric and altimetric features. Particular attention is given to the principles of cartographic generalization, cartometry, the use of geographical names, and the interpretation of map content. The course also introduces major world, European, and Czech cartographic works, the official map series of the Czech Republic, national geodatabase systems, and atlases, providing a foundation for their professional use.

Summary

Professional knowledge of the fundamental principles of cartography, the geometric foundations of cartographic products, map projections, and map content elements. Knowledge and understanding of the principles of cartographic language, the design and use of cartographic symbols, methods for representing and interpreting planimetric and altimetric features, cartographic generalisation, and basic cartometric tasks. Professional skills in reading and interpreting map content, using cartographic symbols and geographical names, assessing map accuracy, and gaining basic familiarity with national mapping products, geodatabase systems, and thematic maps. General competences to independently assess the suitability of a cartographic product for solving basic professional tasks, correctly interpret map content, and select and use appropriate cartographic sources.

Subject syllabus:

1. Cartography, structure and relations to other fields, cartographic works, distributions of maps 2. Basic concepts, azimuthal projection, other azimuthal views. 3. Cylindrical projection - common characteristics, Marinov, Mercator, Lambert, other cylindrical projections. 4.Cone projection - common characteristics, Ptolemy, Lambert, conformal. 5. False projections - pseudo-azimuthal, pseudo-cylindrical, pseudo-cone projection. 6. Other projections - polyconical, polyedric and not classified. 7. Ellipsoid on a sphere - projection, coordinates conservation, conformal and other projections. 8. Cartographic projection for geodetic purposes - used in the Czech republic, proposed for Czechoslovakia, CR 9. Map projection for geodetic purposes - used abroad. 10. Mathematical cartography problems - identification and selection of projection, general mathematical theory of cartography. 11. Cartographic interpretation - relationship between tag and situation in real, cartographic interpretation, point, line, areal tags. 12. Cartographic Interpretation of thematic maps - cartograms, cartodiagrams, dot method, isoline, anamorphosis 13. Cartographic generalization - the nature, factors, methods, automatic generalization 14. Topographic map content - the basic elements of planimetric, planimetric representation. 15. Interpretation of relief - topographic surface, method of representation elevation 16. Description of maps - the standardization of geographic nomenclature, graphical elaboration, description of placement. 17. Cartographic design - design, creation of original. 18. Cartographic printing - the printing, the color maps, color printing 19. Cartometry - measuring distances, angles, areas and determining the coordinates geographic maps 20. Problem solving on maps - determining the morphometric characteristics visibility, line of constant slope, center of territory. 21. History of cartography - the development of European cartography, our oldest maps. 22. The current Czech map works - large scale maps, ZM, TM, thematic maps,atlases. 23. World map works - the state of mapping the Earth, the international map works, international organizations 24. Globes - classification, history, production 25. Other cartographic works - atlases, relief maps, tyflocartography 26. Future of cartography - cartography current challenges, opportunities of cartography, trends, digital map formats, options, benefits and restrictions, DMT 1.
