Summary

The course begins by addressing the shape and dimensions of the Earth and its substitute reference surfaces (the geoid, spheroid, general ellipsoid, and reference ellipsoid). Students are then introduced to the geodetic fundamentals of the Czech Republic (position and elevation) and the related coordinate and elevation systems used in the Czech Republic, including current spatial systems (WGS-84, ETRS89). An important part of the course consists of practical coordinate calculations, which form the very foundation for determining the position of a point on the Earth’s surface. Expertise: Students will acquire basic knowledge in the field of geodesy, particularly regarding the shape and dimensions of the Earth, reference surfaces (geoid, spheroid, ellipsoid), the geodetic framework of the Czech Republic, and the positional and height coordinate systems in use, including WGS-84 and ETRS89. Professional Skills: Students are able to apply the basic principles of working with coordinate and height systems, perform basic coordinate calculations, and determine the position of points in planar coordinate systems using appropriate geodetic procedures. General Competence: The student is competent to understand the basic geodetic and reference systems used in the Czech Republic, correctly select and apply basic procedures for determining the positions of points, and use the acquired knowledge as a foundation for subsequent specialized geodetic courses and practical activities.
