Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

After passing the course, the graduate will be able to analyse independently the submitted specialised texts in the area of water supply, to divide them chronologically into specialised areas. Subsequently, he/she will be able to make elementary analyses of risk areas dealing with the engineering infrastructure in the field of water management and their potential effects on the public infrastructure of territorial units. As needed, on the basis of pursuing this course, he/she will be able to prepare independently crisis preparedness plans for subjects and to participate in preparation of crisis plans for regions and self-governing territorial units. As well, he/she will be able to evaluate and propose the methods of fire safety design for built-up areas, individual premises, and to define the weaknesses and strengths of distribution systems in relation to the supply of water for firefighting.

1. Role and significance of water supply systems. - general - firefighting - Czech Republic - European Union Basic terms in water supply. 2. Legal framework for the utilization and operation of water supply systems. 3. Water demand, determination of demands of population, industry, agriculture and firefighting. - demand planning - water consumption variations - pressure losses - volume losses - safety water storage 4. Water transport and distribution. Preconditions for water supply system operation. Types of water supply systems - gravity water system, pumped water system, water pressure zones. Industrial water systems, water systems for fire-fighting. 5. Water storage, distribution reservoirs, capacity in relation to consumption of water for firefighting: - water service pipe sizing - water meter design - combined solutions for consumption of water for firefighting 6. Water pumping and transport, equipment used, pumping stations, water treatment plants, hydropneumatic stations, possibilities of their application and risks associated with the supply of sufficient quantity of water for firefighting. 7. Fire hydrants, filling and extraction sites, their role, function and inclusion into the system of water supply networks. Risks of use in relation to water quality. 8. Capacity of fire hydrants at maximum in relation to the size of water supply network, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure of water. 9. States of crisis, emergency solutions, application possibilities of ensuring fire safety in the case of water source failure, damage to water supply networks, failure of water storage facilities, worsened water quality, the case of declaration of potable water as non-potable water. 10. Integrated Rescue System, capabilities of the System, its management and forms of co-operation with water supply companies. 11. Domestic water system for firefighting, design, utilization, tests, risks of failure in fire. Practical training in various hydraulic and hydrostatic conditions of water supply systems. 12. High-pressure potable water distribution systems, capacity parameters, advantages, disadvantages, and their risks when used in multi-storey development. Possibilities of combination in firefighting. 13. Consequences of accidents and noxious substance release on wastewater treatment processes, methods of prediction and dealing with individual cases. Safety risks during the work of crews and consequences on the population. 14. Concept of provision of population and public infrastructure with potable water in crisis situations. 15. Crisis planning in the area of operation of water supply systems for the public need.
