Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of the subject is to make the students familiar with basic firefighting equipment, materials and media used in the course of firefighting interventions. Individual lectures will provide the students with information on various kinds of fire extinguishing agents, their applications in practice, research, structure and operation of public water supply systems and inner water supply systems of industrial parks and zones in standard conditions and in conditions of crisis situations. Simultaneously, they will gain sufficient knowledge of construction and operation of fire-fighting water supply systems for fire protection of road tunnel structures. Based both on the acquired professional knowledge and on its understanding, they will be able to identify risks threatening these systems, to discuss them and to organise activities to eliminate them. After carried out basic risk analyses and synthesis, they will be able to defend their new solutions to the problems concerned, to organise the next trend in development and to evaluate its results, to lead professional discussions and to publish specialist articles dealing with safety and operation problems of supply of fire-fighting water to structures.

Summary

Each student will know various kinds of fire extinguishing agents used by fire brigades, will be able to plan and assess the most efficient firefighting equipment and media in individual phases of construction of buildings and road tunnel structures and their operation to maximize the result. The primary basis for fire safety in buildings is usually the implementation of systems oriented towards the sources of drinking and service water from public water supply systems and inner water supply systems of industrial parks and zones. With regard to the importance of the above-mentioned issue, at lectures and practical classes the students will be made familiar in detail with the theory of structures of water supply systems, their operation in standard and crisis situations, their hydraulic efficiency at various hydrodynamic pressure levels, system of networks, significance of pressure zones, hydraulic efficiency of external and internal extraction sites and verification of hydraulic efficiency of fire mains. Part of lectures will focus on the area of design, implementation and operation of water supply and sewer systems increasing the fire safety of road tunnel structures, drainage of used fire-fighting water, drainage of rainfall and alternative disposal of the water in special structures and controlled discharge of the water into aqueous ecosystems.
