The aim of this subject is evaluation of major accidents affecting the environment and synthesis of risk analysis methods.

The course covers the explanation of basic terms for the needs of studying the environmental impacts of accidents (the environment, ecology, etc.), legislation in the area of environmental protection (EIA, IPPC, and others), environmental management (ISO 14 000, EMAS) and methods of the assessment of environmental impacts of accidents.

Subject syllabus:

1. Environment and environmental protection, explanation of basic terms, environment, creation and protection of environment, ecology and environmental factors. 2. Global environmental issues (global warming, ozone layer disruption, Melting glaciers, smog, ...). 3. Partial abiotic components of environment fate of pollutants in the Environment. 4. Emergencies and accidents within the context of the SEVESO Directive, Historical examples major accidents the impacts on the environment. 5. The classification of dangerous substances, safety data sheet requirements, resources information on hazardous substances. 6. Legislation in the field of the environmental protection - Environment general, air protection, water protection, waste management. 7. Environmental impact assessment- (EIA), explaining the principles of procedure, documentation content. 8. Integrated prevention – IPPC, explanation of the principles of procedure, the application model of integrated permit. 9. Management systems in industries, Environmental management system - ISO 14000, EMAS and other systems. 10. Introduction to the prevention of major accidents, explaining the terms hazards and risk, Risk analysis, perception of risk.´ 11. Methods of environmental impact assessment of environmental, overview of available Methods of impact assessment of environmental accidents. 12. The methodology assessment of environmental risks, analysis of European Union methods for long-term releases to the environment, case study of methods. 13.
