Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The subject Managerial Skills for OHS Management aims to teach students to apply in practice basic knowledge of management, organizational culture, psychology, and soft skills, which are necessary for an effective occuptional health and safety management in companies.

Summary

After completing the course students • have knowledge of the competencies that are essential for the position of OHS manager • gaining knowledge about the SMS (safety management system) and its connection with other management systems • acquire skills for the use of the basics of applied psychology in the context of industrial risk identification and the management system of risky industrial enterprises; • acquire skills focused on increasing safety awareness and motivation employees to behave in safe way; • increase competencies in soft skills necessary for position OHS manager; • are aware of the safety culture and certain stages in terms of employee behavior at various levels; • have information on the issue of the human factor in the field of occupational safety and accidents and can apply it in increasing safety in the company; • are ready to apply safety leadership principles in practice • are able to evaluate information from different resources and international OHS platforms and apply them in companies; • are able apply the knowledge and choose right measures and prepare effective procedures for increasing OHS level in the enterprise.

The form of verification of study results is combined, both oral and written. The student also prepares semester work within the course, which he also presents for exercise.

Subject syllabus:

1. Psychology, sociology, ethics. Soft skills and their importance for the competence of OHS professionals. 2. Safety management system in company. 3. Organizational culture and safety culture. 3. Leadership and safety leadership, motivation and engagement - differences, support. 5. Basics of cognitive psychology – cognitive biases, especially in decision - making, critical thinking. 6. ABC model of human behavior and its application in the field of safety. 7. Human factor and its influence on safety, difference between safety I and safety II. 8. Group behavior, teamwork, creating safe habits. 9. Communication and its specifics in the field of safety. 10. Education in the field of OHS. 11. Psychosocial risks, stress and its management, burnout syndrome. 12. Conflicts and their solutions. Ethical issues in OHS. 13. Change management.
