Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The objectives of the toxicology course are as follows: After completing the course, the student will understand the principles of toxicology and specifically toxicology of occupational and environmental safety and toxicology of disasters, specifically major chemical accidents. He/she will understand the classification of hazardous chemicals with regard to the toxicity, genotoxicity and other health effects of hazardous substances, will be able to use the terminology of toxicology and will understand basic concepts and rules of protection from the effects of toxic substances, including knowledge of elementary regulation in this area. The student will be able to find and use information on various forms of toxicity of chemicals and other materials and to apply it to practical problems and plan and realize procedures for determining exposure. She/he will be able to integrate hazard and exposure information into risk characteristics.

Summary

Course Toxicology deals with the effects of hazardous chemicals, mainly of anthropogenic origin, on human health and with the principles of risk management in this field. It focuses mainly on occupational and environmental toxicology and addresses both acute toxic effects, important in the event of incidents and accidents, and chronic effects associated with long-term exposures in labour processes and the environment. The course will enable students to understand the issues of industrial and environmental toxicology, i.e. dangerous properties, typical dose-effect relationships, exposure scenarios and exposure determination and risk characterization related to different types of toxicity. Another part of the subject is an introduction to the principles of risk management of toxic substances.
