Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
After completing the course students should be able to classify natural resources, to identify their basic characteristics and indicators used in this area, to understand the aspects associated with the scarcity of natural resources in relation to sustainable development; to be familiar with the strategies and approaches to managing these resources at the international level, within the EU and its Member States; to identify challenges and potential opportunities for more efficient use of natural resources in relation to sustainable development.

Subject syllabus:
1. Introduction: natural resources and natural capital, basic definitions, historical development of approaches to the resource management at the international level and the EU level.
2. Current strategies and approaches to resource management; Europe 2020 Strategy; A Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe; circular economy.
3. Issues and policies for the use and protection of biodiversity at the international level and the EU level.
4. Problems and policy of land use and protection at the international and the EU level.
5. Issues and policies of forest use and protection at the international and the EU level.
6. The EU Common Agricultural Policy.
7. Water management issues and policies at the international and the EU level.
8. The EU Fisheries and Maritime Policy; addressing marine protection issues at international level.
9. The EU energy policy.
10. The EU raw material policy.
