Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The pedagogical aim of this course is students´ ability - to perceive economic dimension of the European integration in close connection to no-economic aspects of this process (political, social, ethnic, psycho-social etc.) - to identity the main non-economic aspects (consequences) of the economic integration - to recognize the most important and the most topical problems in the non-economic sphere of European integration - to combine knowledge in economics and other social sciences (and humanities) to solve topical issues of European integration - formulate one´s own notion of solving above mentioned problems and to present it - to discuss non-economic topics related to the economic integration of Europe in the enviroment with strongly differentiated opinions

Summary

European integration and its political, social and socio-cultural relationships. Political and social accelerators and decelerators of the European integration process. Desire to be “European” and associated fears. Problems of European identity and Europeism, problems of national identity. “Us” and “them”. Effect of nationalism on European integration. Theory of nationalism. Nationalism types. Xenofobia and nationalism. Europe as a cultural space. Problem of the so called small languages.

Subject syllabus:

European economic integration and its political, social and socio-cultural context. Political and social Decelerator Accelerators and the European integration process. The desire for "Europe" and the fear of it. The problem of European identity and Europeanism. The problem of national identity. "We" and "them". The influence of nationalism on European integration. The theory of nationalism. Types of nationalism. Xenophobia and nationalism. Europe as a cultural space. The problem of so-called small languages. Europe as a social space. The social "charter". Defence, Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union. The institutional structure of the European Union. The problem of "democratic deficit" in the Union. The problem (if any) European political union. A citizens' Europe, Europe of the Regions, Europe homeland? European Federation or confederation? Specifics of international integration of small countries (nations). "Small" and "great" in the Union. The asymmetry factor.
