Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
• To judge and recommend the basic directions of the local and regional ecological policy in connection with the minimization of negative influences of anthropogenic activity on the environment.
• To judge and recommend such development of towns which will not endanger the fulfillment of town's main functions, but on the contrary it will contribute to the increase of citizens' quality of life and to the overall attractiveness of the town.
• To recommend and formulate within the regional ecological policy such utilization of country landscape which will not endanger its ecological stability and renewable quality of natural resources.

Summary
The subject acquaints students with the most topical issues of municipal and regional ecological policy in the Czech Republic and their solution in the conditions of membership in the European Union. Students will be informed on the principles of towns' sustainable development, especially on organic waste management and sustainable transport development. The subject furthermore deals with the new trends of rural areas development and sustainable management in the countryside. Attention is paid to the changing importance of forests, a new hierarchy of their functions importance, and to the principles of sustainable management of water and soil.

Subject syllabus:
1. Forest as the ecosystem and its functions; Significance of the forest and its environmental functions disruption; Water economy function of the forest.
2. Forest as a property, forest economic plans.
3. Surface and underground water sources; Characteristics of water sources of the Earth, the EU and the Czech Republic; Impact of implementation of the Framework guidelines for water in Czech municipalities and regions.
4. Prevention of negative impacts of extreme hydrological situations - floods, droughts.
5. Environmental aspects of the use of agricultural land; Conventional and ecological agriculture
6. Conception of the sustainable way of life in the countryside.
7. Ecological principles of town development; Ecological optimization, specifics of town ecosystem.
8. Environmental interrelations of transport; Sustainable urban transport - a starting point for the solution of current transport problems.
9. Strategy of municipal waste management in the EU.
10. The role of municipalities and regions in municipal waste management in the CR.
11.Urban and rural climate; The use of town climate knowledge for planning practice.
12. A global climate change and expected impacts on Czech regions.
