After successful completion of the course you will be able: * to identitfy basic approaches to the location of economic entities * to explain the formation of spatial structures * to discuss the development of urban systems * to analyse location decision-making of enterprises and households * to use the methods typical for location decision-making

Summary

The main objective of this course consists in the identification of basic approaches to the location behaviour and decision-making of economic entities. Patterns of location are derived either from the view of isolated subject or from the perspective of spatially interacting entity. At the same time, location of households and enterprises serves as a basis for the formation of spatial structures.

Subject syllabus:

1 An enterprise and the household as open systems. Role in the development of the country. 2 Location decisions of enterprises. Approaches to location decisions and comparisons. 3 Localization factors, their development and significance. 4 Role of transport costs in location. Optimal localization. 5 Transport costs and spatial monopoly. The strategy of spatial monopoly. 6 Behaviorists conception of localization. Business organization and location decisions. Types of business organizational structures and localization behavior. 7 Localization behavior of large and small businesses. Business Network. 8 The theory of product cycle and its spatial effects. New industry and regional growth centers. 9 Interaction sites. Dispersion and concentrated localization models. Mechanisms for concentration and dispersion of economic activity. 10 agglomeration effects and their economic significance. The optimum size of cities. 11 Interrelationship of economic entities and creation of spatial structures. Von Thunenova theory of land use. 12 Theory of the spatial structure of the city. Optimization and location decisions households. 13 The settlement structure and urban systems. The theory of central places. The theory of urban systems. 14 Models of urban development. Particular developmental stages and their application.
