1.To analyse the main theoretical aspects of the present international economic integration processes. 2.To appraise the development of the integration processes on the theoretical knowledge basis. 3.To synthetise partial findings for the creation of the comprehensive opinion. 4.To evaluate the EU´s integration stage position on the acquired knowledge basis.

Summary

The aim of this subject is to give the students a comprehensive overview of the content and development of current major theoretical approaches to the processes of international economic integration with a view to European integration. The subject provides skilled information on all types (stages) of economic integration – from free trade area to economic and political union.

Subject syllabus:

1. Basic concepts and aspects of the regional and global integration in the existing international economy. Motive forces and character of the contemporaneous integration processes. 2. Forms and stages of the international economic integration. Application of the theoretical knowledge on real integration processes in the world economy. 3. Main theoretical conceptions and trends in the theory of economic integration – selected theoretical approaches. 4. Hypothetical models of the integration – paradigm of the process of European integration. 5. Barriers to the integration processes. Anti-integration forces with economic and non-economic character in the world economy. Disintegration tendencies. 6. Specific aspects of integration processes under conditions of developing economies. Impetus of the integration, objective and subjective distortions for the effectiveness of the integration. 7. Small economies – their position in the world economy and international economic integration. Advantages and handicaps of the small economies in comparison with large ones. Small economies in the European Union. 8. Customs union theory – aspects connected to the conditions of creation the customs union. 9. Customs union – static and dynamic model. Basic premises, trade creation and trade diversion effects. Economies of scale. 10. Theory of the economic union – basic aspects. Integration effects of the capital and labour market 11. Basic theory of the monetary union. Integration in the monetary area, aspects of the optimum currency area, European Union and the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). 12. Globalization of the world economy - its dynamic changes and influence on the present and the future of regional integration in the world.
