Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
1. To describe the development and the state of the art of EU regional policy, its mechanisms, and tools.
2. To explain the methodology and options of the use of EU Funds and other instruments in regional development and their application under the condition of the Czech Republic.
3. To apply the knowledge gained for the solution of issues of EU social and economic cohesion.

Summary
The aim of the course is to introduce students with the basic theoretical and methodological backgrounds of regional development and regional policy, which are subsequently applied to the determinants and setting of regional policy in the selected EU Member States (eg. Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Finland and the Netherlands) and the European Union as a whole. Upon completion of the course, the students are prepared to solve practical problems in the field of the EU Cohesion Policy in the follow-up Master's degree.

Subject syllabus:
1.Introduction to the subject.
2.The theory of regions and their classification. Definition of the regions. Approaches to the regions. Characteristics of the regions. Classification of the regions in the European Union..
3.Regional disparities and their measurement. The theory of regional disparities. Classification of regional disparities. Indicators of regional disparities. Structural indicators of the European Union.
4.Regional development and regional policy. The theory of regional development. Factors of regional development. Theory of regional policy. The objectives and instruments of regional policy. The approaches to regional policy.
5.Development of regional policy in the European Union. The development of regional policy in selected EU members’ states (Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany…).
6.EU Regional Policy. The aim and objectives of EU Regional Policy. Principles of EU regional policy. Development of EU regional and structural policy.
7.Legislative and Institutional framework of EU Regional Policy. EU primary and secondary legislation of EU Regional Policy. Institutions of EU Regional Policy.
