Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
After the course, students will be able:
1. To understand the process of globalization and its consequences in the world economy and other spheres of societal life.
2. To identify and evaluate impact of globalization on main actors of international system.
3. To explain the importance of civil society, to evaluate its development in national, regional and global context.
4. To qualify the main approaches to the solution of actual global challenges applied by international governmental and non-governmental organizations.
5. To identify possibilities of Czech non-governmental organizations to contribute to solution of actual global challenges.
6. To apply reached competences on exploration of practical cases.

Summary
Subject is focused on the phenomenon of globalization and its impact on the position and role of the civil society in globalized world. Global civil society is considered to be important partner for traditional actors of global governance. Organizations of global civil society have impact on formation of public policies, improvement of public awareness and discussion on global challenges. Organizations of global civil society also contribute to the solution of actual global challenges concerning development, human rights, democracy, environmental protection and security. They state a bridge between governmental and non-governmental actors of international system.

Subject syllabus:
1. Globalization as the phenomenon of 20th and 21st century: term globalization, dimensions and determinants of globalization, stages of globalization, impact of globalization on world economy a politics, hyperglobalization and deglobalization.
2. Processes interrelated with globalization: impacts of globalization in in economic, social, cultural and political sphere, positive and negative consequences. Neoliberalism and global capitalism.
3. Impact of globalization on traditional actors of international system: impact of globalization on nation-states, their sovereignty, autonomy and functions, international governmental organizations, their position, functions and role in international system.
4. Globalization and civil society: concept of civil society, actors of civil society with global overlap - international nongovernmental organizations, social movements, labour unions, church organizations, think tanks, etc.
5. Civil society in developed and developing countries, preconditions for the formation of civil society in Europe, in the United Sates and global overlap of their activities, international non-governmental organizations, their centralization and decentralization, preconditions for the formation civil society in selected developing countries.
6. Global governance: concept of global governance, importance and roles, dimensions, actors of governance in its dimensions, demand for global governance, role of global governance, governmental and non-governmental actors of global governance, rise of the importance of the non-governmental ones.
7. Transnational and global civil society: concept of transnational and global civil society, role in international system, participation on global governance, transnational activism a inclusion of organization of civil society into the decision-making process on national, regional and global level, European civil society.
8. Actual socio-economic challenges for global governance: impact of globalization on socio-economic development in the world, poverty, income inequality on national and global level, unequal distribution of sources for human development and well-being, human rights.
9. Actual security and environmental challenges for global governance: new security challenges (health, social and environmental) on national and global level, human security and its dimensions, role of governmental and nongovernmental actors in security sphere, limits of the state actors in solution of security and environmental challenges with global overlap, sustainable development.
10. Solution of selected global challenges by the governmental actors of international system: motivation, forms and approaches of states and international governmental organizations, gap in responsibility and transparency in decision-making process of traditional governmental actors in solution of global challenges.
11. Contribution of international non-governmental organizations to solution of global challenges: motivation and forms, service, advocacy, information, control and communication functions, movements for global social justice.
12. Partnership of international governmental and non-governmental actors for solution of global challenges: possibilities of the commitment of nongovernmental organizations coming from developed countries in the developing ones with actual developmental and humanitarian problems, cooperation of selected non-governmental organizations with international governmental organizations.
13. Non-governmental organizations in Czech Republic and their contribution to the development cooperation and humanitarian aid in the world: development cooperation as the part of foreign policy, forms and modalities of development cooperation, forms of the engaging in cooperation from the side of non-governmental organizations, realization of development cooperation and humanitarian aid.
14. Activity of Czech non-governmental organizations in the world: practical cases of their activities in Africa, East Europe or other selected regions.
