Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

After completing this subject, students will be able to understand and apply the following skills and topic areas: - selected topic areas from metal structures (crane tracks, design of joints, fatigue and brittle fracture of steel structures, stainless steels, class 4 cross sections, steel members exposed to torsion, three-dimensional buckling of steel members); - selected topic areas from timber structures (composite timber and concrete structures, timber bridges and footbridges, fatigue and brittle fracture of timber structures, strengthening of timber structures, defects and failures of timber structures).

Summary

1. Crane tracks – utilization in practice, loading, typology. 2. Crane trucks - design and assessment principles. 3. Fatigue and brittle fracture of steel structures. 4. Steel members exposed to torsion. 5. Design and assessment of joints, component method, hollow section joints. 6. Class 4 cross sections. 7. Three-dimensional buckling of steel members. 8. Stainless steel. 9. Fatigue and brittle failure. Oscillation of timber structures. 10. Composite timber and concrete structures. 11. Timber bridges and footbridges – spatial arrangement, loads, basic types, main carrying elements, equipment. 12. Timber bridges and footbridges – design principles in light of carrying capacity, serviceability and durability. 13. Special timber structures. Strengthening of timber structure elements. 14. Defects and failures of timber structures.
