After completing this subject, students will be able to understand and apply the following skills and topic areas: - design and assessment of reinforced concrete elements; - project documentation, plan of shape and reinforcement.

Summary

Within this subject students will gain skills how to design and assess reliability of reinforced concrete elements.This subject directly follows on the subjects Elasticity and Plasticity and Actions on Building Structures.By study of this subject students acquire knowledge about design and reliability assessment of reinforced concrete members and as well about way of preparation of basic project documentation.

At least 70% attendance in the tutorial. Absence, up to a maximum of 30%, must be excused and accepted by the teacher (the teacher decides the reasonableness of the excuse). Tasks assigned in tutorial must be hand in within the deadline set by the teacher.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: Unit 1: Materials: mechanical parameters of concrete, stress and strain diagrams, rheological properties of concrete. Mechanical parameters of reinforcement, stress and strain diagrams. Interaction of concrete and reinforcement, hisotry of concrete, basics of reliability and limit states theory. Durability of reinforced concrete structures, cover of reinforcement. Unit 2: Dimensioning of bending elements, limit equilibrium method. Slab, beam. Detailings of reinforcement of bending elements, drawing of reinforcement structures. Unit 3: Shear force bearing capacity, strut-and-tie model. Types of shear reinforcement, detailings of shear reinforcement. Punching and torsion. Unit 4: Eccentricaly loaded (compressed) elements, buckling. Interaction diagram. Detailings of reinforcement of mainly compressed elements. Eccentricaly loaded (tensioned) elements. Confined elements. Biaxial bending. Unit 5: Serviceability limit states (SLS). Combinations of actions for SLS. Stress limitation, crack width. Deflection control. Unit 6: Plain concrete structures. Tutorials: Unit 1: Dimensioning of reinforced concrete slab, load calculation, design of bending reinforcement, detailings of reinforcement, drawing of reinforcement. Test of knowledge. Unit 2: Dimensioning of beams, load calculation, design of bending and shear reinforcement, detailings of reinforcement, drawing of reinforcement. Test of knowledge. Unit 3: Dimensioning of elements subjected to compression and bending, design of reinforcement, interaction diagram, assessment of eccentricaly loaded (compressed) elements. Unit 4: Assessment of serviceability limit state, simplified assessment of deflection through slenderness ratio.
