Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge and skills in the area of design, reliability assessment and realization of masonry and composite structures. Student has to obtain and prove an adequate general overview of solved problems. Student also has to work out the individual project related to the scope of the thesis.

Teaching methods

Individual consultations

Summary

The analysis of masonry and composite elements and structures, material models and solution methods for stress-strain state. Material models of mortar, masonry units and masonry. The effect of geometric and material nonlinearity. Time-depending models of creep and shrinkage of masonry. Prestressed masonry, types of prestressing. The state of stress analysis in anchorage zones.

Other requirements

At least 70% attendance in the tutorial. Absence, up to a maximum of 30%, must be excused and accepted by the teacher (the teacher decides the reasonableness of the excuse). Tasks assigned in tutorial must be hand in within the deadline set by the teacher.

Prerequisities

Subject has no prerequisities.

Co-requisities

Subject has no co-requisities.

Subject syllabus:

General scope of the course: Material models of mortar, masonry units and masonry. The stress-strain analysis of masonry pillars, walls and vaults. The effect of geometric and material nonlinearity. The state of stress solution by means of two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite elements. Isotropic and orthotropic theory and stiffness matrix. Internal forces, principal stresses and their trajectories. Time-depending models of creep and shrinkage of masonry. Prestressed masonry, types of prestressing. The state of stress analysis in anchorage zones. Restoration, strengthening and reconstruction of masonry structures. Individual project: The topic and the form of an individual project will be chosen by the teacher considering the scope of the thesis.
