Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge and skills in the area of design, reliability assessment and realization of prestressed elements and constructions of bridges, engineering structures and industrial buildings. Student has to obtain and prove an adequate general overview of solved problems. Student also has to work out the individual project related to the scope of the thesis.

Teaching methods

Individual consultations

Summary

Design and assessment of prestressed elements and structures. Prestressed elements and structures of bridges, engineering structures and industrial buildings. Numerical solution methods for real cross-sections. The placement of prestressing tendons, the effect on bending and shear resistance. Serviceability limit states – stress limitation, crack control and strain in elements of prestressed structures.

Compulsory literature:

1. EN 1992-2 Eurocode 2 - Design of concrete structures - Part 2: Concrete bridges – Design and detailing rules, CEN, 2007. 2. EN 1992-1-1 Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures – Part 1: General rules and rules for buildings. CEN, 2006.

Subject syllabus:

General scope of the course: Principle and use of prestressed concrete, materials and their characteristics. The transfer of prestress to concrete, technology, the initial prestress force of elements with tendons and unbonded tendons. Ideal cross-section and its meaning, numerical solution methods for real cross-sections. Prestress changes until and after the point of transfer of prestress to concrete. Losses of prestress, their calculation, the effect and importance for resistance and serviceability. The placement of prestressing tendons, the effect on bending and shear resistance. Prestress elements in elastic state; ultimate limit states – failure due to bending moment and axial force. Ultimate limit states – shear failure, torsion failure and local stress. Serviceability limit states – stress limitation, crack control and strain in elements of prestressed structures. Statically indeterminate structures, the effect of creep and shrinkage. Individual project: The topic and the form of an individual project will be chosen by the teacher considering the scope of the thesis.
