Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

After completing this subject, students will be able to understand and apply the following skills and topic areas: - design and assessment of composite steel and concrete structures; - design and assessment of large-span steel structures; - design and assessment of steel silos and tanks, towers, masts and chimneys, technological structures; - design and assessment of thin-walled steel structures; - design and assessment of aluminium structures; - design and assessment of timber structures (residential buildings, sports halls, cultural buildings, manufacturing buildings); - fire safety of timber structures; - maintenance, repairs and reconstructions of timber structures.

1. Composite steel and concrete structures – general principles, composite steel and concrete floors. 2. Composite steel and concrete structures – composite steel and concrete columns, joints in composite steel and concrete structures. 3. Large-span steel structures. 4. Steel silos and tanks. 5. Towers, masts and chimneys, technological structures. 6. Thin-walled steel structures. 7. Aluminium structures. 8. Corrosion of structural steel, anticorrosive protection. Inspections, maintenance and reconstructions o steel structures. 9. Timber structures systems of living buildings. 10. Timber structures objects for production, culture and sport. 11. Spatial stiffness of timber structures. Lumber structures. 12. Spatial timber structures, gables, vaults, dome vaults, shells. 13. Fire resistance of timber structure elements and joints. Design principles. 14. Maintenance, sanitation and reconstruction of timber structures. Fabrication, erection and protection of timber structures.

Composite steel and concrete floor – introduction, assignment of semestral work. 2. Composite steel and concrete floor – design and assessment of trapezoidal sheeting acting as permanent formwork for use in composite steel and concrete floors. 3. Composite steel and concrete floor – design and assessment of floor beams. 4. Composite steel and concrete floor – design and assessment of girders. 5. Composite steel and concrete columns – introduction, column in compression. 6. Composite steel and concrete columns – introduction, column in bending and compression. 7. Composite steel and concrete floor decks. 8. Assessment of thin-walled members - selected examples. 9. Timber plate trusses – double tapered beam, assignment of semestral work. 10. Timber plate trusses – curved, gibbous and single tapered beam. 11. Timber carrying structure hall – introduction, calculation of actions, global analysis. 12. Timber carrying structure hall – design and assessment of moment-resisting joint. 13. Timber carrying structure hall – design and assessment of columns, frame cross beams and hinged joint of the top. 14. Credit exam.
