Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

To define basic types of natural stone, to describe their composition and properties, to know possibilities of usage of main types of stone in constructions. To know basic treatment and conservation technologies. To know basic procedures of stone and stone products properties testing and to know design experiments to individual type of stone and construction product. To know summarize results to industrial applications.

Summary

Cílem předmětu je seznámit posluchače s hlavními typy přírodních kamenů, používaných v minulosti i v současnosti jako stavební, dekorační a sochařský materiál. Důraz bude kladen na konfrontaci vnitřního složení kamene a jeho výsledných vnějších vlastností, zejména odolnosti vůči degradaci a zvětrávání. Probírány budou základní metody zkoušení vlastností kamene a kamenických výrobků. Pozornost bude věnována rovněž problematice konzervace a ošetřování přírodního kamene. Posluchač bude seznámen s možnostmi náhrady přírodních materiálů umělými produkty.

Subject syllabus:

• Basic types of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks used as building, statue and decorative stone, their composition and properties (lecture will be accompanied by practical show of chosen stones) • Occurrence of the most important natural stones in Czech republic and abroad. • Basic types of stonemason´s products. • Processing of natural stone. Types and procedures of stone surface processing. • Reasons and types of the stone degradation. Influence of internal composition of stone on its resistance to weathering. • Testing methods to analyse mechanical and durability properties of stone (lecture will be accompanied by practical testing of basic properties of stone in laboratory) • An overview of technical demands on stonemason´s products. • Cleaning of stone and its basic types. Positives and negatives of each type of cleaning (cleaning by water, mechanical cleaning, chemical cleaning) • Conservation methods and procedures. Basic types of inorganic and organic conservation agents used in preservation. Antigraffiti protection. • Renovation of stone sights. Basic technologies of stone renovation. Materials suitable to stone renovation dependent on type and properties of stone. • Artificial stone suitable to renovation of sights, its types, properties and durability.
