Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

- introduce students with the concept of geotechnical monitoring - formulate basic general principles and methods of geotechnical monitoring - characterize the methods and procedures of geotechnical measurements, comparison of individual types of methods - formulate and discuss projects for geotechnical monitoring for individual types of geotechnical and underground structures - analysis of evaluation possibilities of geotechnical monitoring results

Summary

Course contents are the basic principles of geotechnical monitoring, basic principles of monitoring systems and a basic overview of methods and instrumentation, which can be used for monitoring stresses in the rock environment, in reinforcement, load of the reinforcement, deformations, settlements, water pressures, water flow, seismic activity, radon (dynamometers, inclinometers, convergometers, extenzometers, piezometers, settlements sensors, water flow indicators, etc.). Within the course, the students are also acquainted with the design of monitoring for various types of underground structures, slopes and embankments and with the possibilities of processing the resulting monitored data, including the possible inverse analysis.

Subject syllabus:

Lecture topics: Geotechnical monitoring, its main functions and components. Basic principles of monitoring systems. Measurement of the primary stress of the rock mass - deformation methods, compensatory methods, unloading methods, hydrofracturing. Convergometric measurements, measurements of the origin and deformations of cracks and fissures. Extensometric and inclinometric measurements, monitoring of rock movements using brittle wires. Ground water monitoring - monitoring of water pressures and direction of groundwater flow. Monitoring of stress and loading on support. Monitoring of settlements and large deformation monitoring, temperature monitoring. Monitoring of seismic activity and monitoring of radon. Design of underground constructions monitoring. Design of slopes and embankments monitoring. Inverse analysis, principle and methods. Practice topics: Implementation of convergometric measurements, their evaluation. Inclinometric measurements - implementation and their evaluation. Monitoring of relative displacements in the direction of the borehole axis - extensometric measurements. Water pressure monitoring using piezometers. Practical introduction to the possibilities of stress and load monitoring - direct and indirect methods. Design of monitoring system for underground constructions. Design of slope and embankments monitoring systems. Inverse calculation, INVERZET software.
