Summary

A cycle focused on the development of European architecture of the 19th century. In individual lectures, students will learn about the transformation of architecture and building practice during the 19th century. The lecture will focus on the protagonists and key architectural works of the epochs. A proportion of the lectures will be devoted to the development of architecture in the Czech lands in an international context. In addition to the traditional themes of architectural orders, which have so far been especially the palace and the temple, new tasks such as engineering and industrial buildings, civilian, sanitary, cultural or commercial buildings or residential colony colonies enter the 19th century. Construction technologies and constructions are also changing, where iron has played a new important role. European cities are undergoing dynamic development, which is reflected in the development of urban theories and different approaches in practice. Students will get an idea of transformation of expressive means of architecture, development of solution of structural problems and use of building materials; they will also have the ability to take this knowledge into account when interpreting building monuments from this period independently, they can categorize them, approximately date and evaluate their quality.
