Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Students manage the design and assessment of the structural elements with respect to basic types of stresses. Determination of the reactions and internal forces on the simple statically indetermined structures is managed.

Summary

Fundamental principles of design and assessment of structural elements. Stress and strain analysis after 1st order theory. Introduction of applications according to 2nd order theory. Elastic-plastic behaviour of materials.

Recommended literature:

Other requirements

At least 70% attendance at the exercises. Absence, up to a maximum of 30%, must be excused and the apology must be accepted by the teacher (the teacher decides to recognize the reason for the excuse). Tasks assigned on the exercises must be hand in within the dates set by the teacher.

1. Introduction. 2. Stress and strain. Mechanical properties of materials. 3. Principles of structural desing. 4. Tension and compression members. 5. Torsion. 6. Bending. 7. Shear. 8. Deflections of beams: integration of deflection curve. 9. Deformation of beams: Mohr method. 10. Introduction to plane stress problem. 11. Elastic stability. 12. Elastic and elastic-plastic behaviour of materials. 13. Introduction to fatique, to fracture mechanics and to rheological behaviour of material and structures. 14. Application of elasticity and plasticity theory in engineering practice.
