Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

At the end of the course students should be able to orientate themselves in the initial stylistic changes in the field of applied art from their beginnings to the 20th century, both in the Czech lands and abroad. They will acquire the prerequisites for distinguishing the creative principles of individual artistic styles and the ability to understand the context and symbiosis of free and applied art. The aim of the discipline is to introduce students to artistic movements in the global context. The impact of the Arts and Crafts movement on individual areas of applied art will be discussed, as well as art craft in relation to free art in the Art Nouveau period. Art déco in European centers and its specific appearance in the Czech lands. Bauhaus and Design Changes of the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Arts and crafts as a part of the history of fine arts, focusing on important areas of craftsmanship in the Czech lands and abroad from Romanesque to 20th century.

Subject syllabus:

The beginnings of craft in Bohemia and Moravia. Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo art craft. Socio-historical changes and new technological processes - Classicism, Empire, Biedermeier. The phenomenon of historicism in the arts and crafts. Art Nouveau. Artistic craft in relation to artistic styles of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Art movements following the Arts and Crafts movement. Art déco and its appearance in Czech lands and abroad. (Artel, Thonet, Moser, Cooperative Works, etc.). Bauhaus and design changes in the 30s to 50s of the 20th century. Applied works (glassmaking, furniture, textiles, porcelain etc.) overlapping with contemporary design.
