Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The students will obtain the knowledge of flow around bodies with a focus on air profiles, determination of resistance and buoyancy forces acting on the aircraft, according to requirements of JAR-66.

Summary

Atmospheric Physics, Continuity equation, Bernoulli's equation, Pitot tube and velocity measurement, laminar and turbulent flow, boundary layer, the resistance elements, flow profiles, Žukovsky equation, buoyancy, and resistance. The balance of forces on the airplane, glide, turn theory, stable flight.

Subject syllabus:

1 Atmospheric Physics. The international atmosphere of the ISA, application in aerodynamics. Physical properties of air. 2 Basic concepts of fluid flow laminar and turbulent flow, free flow, relative flow, slope flow, turbulent flow, stagnation. 3 Basic equations describing the flow Continuity equation, Euler equations of hydrodynamics, the Bernoulli equation for ideal and real fluid applications 4 Velocity and pressure in flowing fluid Pitot and Pitot tube, horizontal gauge, venturi. Glow anemometer. 5 Change of momentum Momentum change theorem, calculation of forces in fluid flow 6 Wrapping bodies. Forces and moments in the body wrap, aerodynamic force, resistance elements. Wrap plates, spheres and cylinders. Circulation speed, Žukovsky equation. 7 Boundary layer Boundary layer, the thickness of the boundary layer, boundary layer separation. Boundary layer. 8 Flow over airfoil Flight profile, geometry and nomenclature. Aerodynamic center, the aerodynamic mesh wings, wing shape and aspect ratio, angle of attack, the accrued and outgoing current. 9 Forces acting on an airfoil Drag, lift, lift coefficient, drag coefficient, aerodynamic polar, induced resistance 10 Pollution effects of aerodynamic surfaces including ice, snow, frost. Theory of Flight 11 The relationship between lift, gravity, tension and resistance. Glide,steady state flights, power. The theory of turns. 12 Influence of load factor: stall speed, the flight envelope and structural strength limitations.Means to increase buoyancy. 13 Flight Stability and Dynamics Longitudinal, lateral and directional stability (active and passive)
