Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge of the Msc. study in the areas of fluid mechanics related to the topic of the doctoral studies. Students will build on the knowledge gained in the general mechanics, fluid mechanics, and termomechanice, which may apply when exploring the principles of the continuum.

Summary

Liquids have a vital role in our lives. They make our own existence as well as a range of phenomena and processes in nature and various industries. Research their behavior under various conditions is still paid great attention, especially in conjunction with the movement of fluid-flow. In the course Selected Topics Fluid Mechanics attention is paid to the basic equations describing the flow of ideal and viscous fluids and their applications in connection with the doctoral research project.

Subject syllabus:

1. Euler's equation of hydrostatic, differential equations of pressure function, Pascal's law 2. Euler's equation of hydrodynamics, the application possibilities of its integration 3. Continuity equation for one and three dimensional flow, derivation 4. Bernoulli's equation for an ideal fluid, derivation and practical application 5. Bernoulli's equation for compressible fluid, derivation and practical application 6. Navier-Stokes equations, and the derivation of the solution, including the numerical modeling 7. Bernoulli's equation for viscous fluid, friction losses, local losses in circular and non-circular pipe 8. Laminar flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids in a circular pipe in a rectangular gap in the ring, the sag along the vertical wall 9. Turbulent flow, turbulence, characteristics and mathematical description of turbulent flow using mathematical statistics 10. Bernoulli's equations for a rotating channel and the application on centrifugal pump, the principle of energy conversion 11. The flow over bodies, boundary layer theory, aerodynamics, Karman vortex street 12. Change of momentum theorem, applications 13. Physical similarity, theory and modeling
