Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Students learn to understand the problems of the utilisation of renewable energy sources and waste management. Students will be able to: - Explain and define basic concepts discussed in the fields of - Clarify the links and connections within the given fields and external links to other areas of energy - Describe the basic technical equipments used in those fields and explain their their principles They will receive: - An overview of the terminology - An overview of the basic technological processes transform energy from renewable sources and waste They will be able to: - Perform basic energy balance and capacity calculations in the areas of the issue - Select appropriate ways and methods to achieve the desired objectives in practice

Summary

The subject deals with attributes and ways of utilization of renewable and applications of waste management. Students gain basic information in branches utilization of solar, water, wind, biomass energy, utilization of low potential heat by heat pumps. To the students will be given the information abou waste utilisation - thermal processes, dumpling, inceniration, recycling.

Subject syllabus:

1. Energy: types, sources, transformations, evaluation. 2. Solar energy. Heat and photovoltaic conversion. 3. Water energy, hydropower stations. Hydro turbines. 4. Wind energy, wind power stations. 5. Geothermal energy. Sea energy. 6. Low potential heat for heat pumps. 7. Biomass. 8. Waste substances and types of resources. Legislation related to issues. 9. Landfilling of waste. Recycling of waste. 10. Definitions and differences between species and methods of waste management. 11. Evaluation and determination of risks. 12. Thermic waste disposal. Fluidized bed combustion. Grate and rotary furnaces. Wood waste. 13. Radioactive waste. Hospital and toxic waste. Modern industrial and municipal waste incinerator. 14. The capture of sulfur oxides, nitrogen, halogens, heavy metals and fumes.
