Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

After completing the course the student can apply the theory to the design of electric heating method, can assess the interference effects of electro-thermal devices on the power grids and suggest possibilities of their limitation. In exercises, laboratories, and projects, it demonstrates the ability to calculate and design electro-thermal devices with computer support when applying a variant solution.

Summary

The course focuses on industrial applications of resistance, induction, arc, dielectric, electron and laser principles of utilization of transformation of electric energy into thermal energy, their optimization with regard to energy consumption and elimination their disturbances on the supply network. It also includes energy issues of electrical heating.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: Heat transfer. Electrical resistance heat. Electric arc furnaces (EAF) - arc characteristics, circular diagram, power supply asymmetry, operating characteristics. EAF - energy balance, disturbing effects, possibilities of compensation. Energy EAF optimization with EAF reactor, EAF compensation devices, EAF diagnostics. Plasma electrothermal appliances. Induction electrothermal appliances - crucible and channel furnaces. Inductive surface heating, heating, soldering and welding. Asymmetry in inductive electrothermal equipment devices. Dielectric heating. Power sources for induction and dielectric heating. Microwave heating. Electron heating. Laser electrothermal appliances. Arc and resistance welding. Protection and connection of electrothermal appliances. Load compensation. Electrical heating. Design of electric heating. Automatic regulation of heating. Power supply of floor heating. Exercises: Getting acquainted with the requirements for passing the exercises. Safety regulations. Instructions for processing projects and protocols. Design of an electric resistance furnace Indirect resistance heating - furnace control, comparison of energy consumption for heating the charge by theoretical calculation and measurement on a real laboratory furnace. Indirect resistance heating - Calculation of batch heating time. Direct resistance heating. Calculate the short EAF path. Choke. EAF - work with circular diagram, working characteristics. EAF control systems. Design of an induction crucible furnace. Project assignment. Inductive channel furnaces, dielectric heating. Calculation of heat losses. Design of electric heating, economic evaluation. Credit test. Labs: Direct resistance heating. Symmetry of single-phase load. Projects: Optimisation of indirect resistance heating. Optimisation of direct resistance heating. Optimisation of an electric arc furnace.
