Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Students will get an idea of applications of electrotechnics in industry, especially in engineering. They should understand the principles how common electrical appliances work, and how to operate them. The aim is that in their future careers, students can understand problems that have to do with electrical appliances that are used in industry, as well as their operation and the necessary connection between electronical equipment and machinery in the designing and construction process. Another goal is to teach students where and how to find more information (literature, norms, the Internet...)

Summary

The course brings further information about the basics of semiconductor technology. It is a continuation of Electrical Engineering I and II courses, included in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering bachelor study program. As for the contents, the course looks at semiconductor devices, the way they work and their practical applications in weak current electronic circuits and in power electronic circuits.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

- Checking students‘ knowledge in discussions and questions in the seminar. Encouraging students to be active in the process of identifying problems, looking for their solutions and interpreting results - Course work. First, students have to orientate in the given data, then they assess them, select relevant information and present their solution. The result is presented in the final form of the course work.

Subject syllabus:

1. Semiconductor devices and its properties – recapitulation. Diodes, transistors, thyristors, integrated circuits. Rectifiers, voltage multipliers. 2. DC voltage filtration, voltage regulators, linear and switching voltage regulators. 3. Amplifiers, power amplifiers and preamplifiers. 4. Operation amplifiers – description, structure, basic applications. 5. Logical circuits, combination logical circuits, examples, applications. 6. Logical circuits, sequential logical circuits, examples, applications. 7. Microprocessors, one chip microcontrollers, applications, industrial PC and PLC application. 8. AD and DA converters, types, parameters, applications. Galvanic separation. 9. Power semiconductor devices, diodes, IGBT, IGCT, GTO, properties and applications. 10. Chopper converters, up and down converters, principles, connections, properties, applications. AC converters, invertors, principles, properties, applications. 11. Frequency converters, principles, layout, parameters, applications. 12. Reserve power supplies, principles, parameters, application. 13. Construction of electronic equipment, printed circuits. Servomechanisms, regulated systems with close and open loop. 14. Electromagnetic compatibility, interference between power converters and the power net. EMC requirements.
