Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

To understand the concept and principle of telecommunication networks, including methods of transmission and signaling. Learning outcomes are set so that the students are able to identify, apply and solve tasks in the field of telecommunication networks.

Summary

The subject Telecommunication networks is oriented on an overview of all important developing network technologies for the transmission of various types of information like voice, data, video or multimedia information. It includes circuit-switched and packet-switched networks. An attention is also dedicated to optical transmission networks that create an inseparable part of a physical infrastructure of telecommunication networks, various network procedures for a connection establishment with the specified service quality and fundamentals of the network management. It is also interested in LAN networks, WAN networks, Internet, access networks and various wireless technologies.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: 1) Telecommunication networks attributes, communication model, signaling, methods of signal switching. 2) RM OSI and its layers. TCP/IP protocol model and its layers, IP, TCP, UDP and RTP. Network management system, telecommunication management network. 3) LAN networks - LAN protocol stack, media access methods in LANs, network topologies, Ethernet. 4) WAN networks - Frame Relay, traffic management in Frame Relay, ATM, ATM protocol model. 5) Transport networks - PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy), SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy), SONET (Synchronous Optical Network), DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing), used network devices. 6) IP WAN networks, pure IP WAN networks, HDLC and PPP, leased lines. MPLS technology. 7) Internet - structure of Internet. Secure transport services - IPsec, SSL, VPN. VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology. Cloud computing. 8) Signaling in telecommunication networks - CCS7, signaling in ATM, ISDN, GSM, VoIP. 9) Access networks (conceptions) - ISDN, xDSL, DOCSIS, DVB-RCS, IPTV, FTTx, PON. 10) Wireless networks (conceptions) - WiFi, Bluetooth, WiMAX, Zigbee, DECT. 11) and 12) Mobile technologies of the 1th a 2nd generation - NMT, AMPS, GSM, PDC, IS-95. 13) and 14) Mobile technologies of the 3rd a 4th generation - IMT-2000, CDMA 2000, W-CDMA UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA, Rel.99-Rel.10 SAE/EPS, LTE. Future and visions in mobile networks (Rel.11 and Rel.12). Exercises: 1) Safety in laboratories. Basic information about the subject and its classification. 2) Multimedial presentation of RM OSI. 3) Laboratory work - xDSL technology. 4) Laboratory work - WiFi technology. 5) Laboratory work - VoIP technology. 6) Laboratory work - Computer networks. 7) Laboratory work - GSM technology. 8) Laboratory work - Access networks. 9) Test nr.1. 10) Laboratory work - Passive optical networks. 11) Laboratory work - Testing of mobile phones. 12) Laboratory work - Throughput and delay measurement in data networks. 13) Test nr. 2. 14) Reserve term for tests and labs. Projects: Protocol from the measurement of voice quality in VoIP. Protocol from the testing of mobile phones.
