Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The course acquaints students with the basic principles and history of radiolocation. Explains the methods of radio positioning, the use of coordinate systems in positioning, the method of detecting targets, distinguishing the characters of the targets, methods and forms of displaying processed results.

Summary

The course familiarizes students with the basic principles and history of radiolocation. He / she will explain the methods of radio positioning, the use of coordinate systems for positioning, the method of target detection, the distinguishing of target characters, the methods and extent of displaying the processed results. Emphasis is placed on the systems: Primary Radar (PSR), Secondary Radar (MSSR), Precision Landing Radar (PAR) and ADSB. In these systems, the principle of operation at the level of individual blocks, the basic mathematical description of their function and a brief description of the system design will be explained. Students will learn the physics of radar signal propagation and the way of their processing. Part of the course is an excursion in a company that actively manufactures radar technology.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

It is necessary to obtain at least 30 points from the maximum of 45 points by the end of the semester *Test, total 20 points *1 point per exercise, maximum 5 points (5 tasks). *Semestral work maximum 20 points.

Subject syllabus:

Syllabus of lectures 1. Introduction to radar systems, history of radiolocation, current development of radar technology, basic terms 2. Principles of radio positioning, types of positioning systems, applications 3. Timing and phase measurement systems, principle of time delay measurement, resolution, uniqueness, accuracy, DOP factor, Angle and Doppler system of position and velocity measurement, resolution, uniqueness, accuracy, DOP factor 4. Primary radar PSR, secondary radar MSSR, precision landing radar PAR, basic description and use 5. FMCW radar, ADSB system, 3D Radar, basic description and usage 6. Radionavigation systems NDB, VOR, ILS, MLS, Meteorological radars, remote sensing, georadar (GPR), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) 7. Antenna systems in radar technology, types of antenna diagrams, vertical diagram of 2D radar coverage, Antenna diagram of 3D radars, determination of target height, Electromagnetic wave propagation in the atmosphere, terrain and barriers. 8. Reflections from objects, types of targets (swerling I, swerling II), RCS calculation, use of field simulator in RCS calculation, RCS measurement 9. Radar equation of monostatic and bistatic primary radar, modified shapes, range equations, methods of calculation and application to specific types of radar, Beacon equation of secondary radar, modified shapes, range equations, methods of calculation and applications 10. Excursion to a company whose activities are related to radar and radionavigation Syllabus of tutorials 1. (1-2) calculations of tasks focused on presented systems (range, accuracy) 2. 3. FMCW radar system design calculations, position detection and doppler velocity calculations, 4. Calculations of tasks focused on propagation, attenuation of free space, reflection from meteo formations, reflection from terrain barriers 5. RCS calculations based on analytical models, calculations using CST Microwave studio field simulator 6. Calculations of primary radar range, power balance (Matlab) 7. Calculations of secondary radar range, power balance (Matlab) 8. Laboratory exercise on functional FMCW radar, basic display and characteristics of detected targets (Matlab) 9. Laboratory exercise on functional FMCW radar, processing of measured characteristics, determination of Doppler velocity (Matlab) 10. Laboratory exercise on functional FMCW radar, presentation of project results in power point, discussion about results.
