Understand the structure, design and functions of the radio network. Learning outcomes are set so that the students are able to identify and apply tasks in the area of cellular networks.

Summary

Students will be introduced into the structure and principle of mobile networks. Attention will be given into voice and data communication. Student will be familiarized with development trends in current area as well.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: Introduction into radio networks. Fundamental terms, types of radio networks (land mobile services, satellite communication). Systems for public radiotelephone networks, international standards, frequency bands, topology of mobile networks, working capacities. GSM system. Introduction into GSM system, types of multiple access (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA), radio channels (traffic and control channels). Architecture of GSM system,base stations subsystem (BTS, BSC), network and switching subsystem (MSC, VLR, HLR, AUC, EIR), operation support subsystem. GSM layers, protocols and services. Layer type model of GSM system, communication protocols, classification of GSM services. GSM - physical layer, multiple access, frames hierarchy. GSM - data link and network layers, messages segmentation, messages security (LAPDm, LAPD and MTP protocols). Connection setup,network management, allocated frequency management. Interfaces in the GSM network, Um - radio interface between MS and BTS, Abis - interface between BTS and BSC, A - interface between BSC and MSC. Procedures and Signalizations in the GSM Network. Security service (subscriber authentication, data encoding, roaming, location registration and update), call setup (MOC, MTC), handover. GSM network management, GSM management architecture (configuration management, traffic management, performance management, fault management, security management, administration). Data transmisssion in the GSM network (EDGE, HSCSD, GPRS), basic description, transmission rates. GPRS. History, network architecture, functions of network components, intarfaces, aplications. GSM planning. System parameters definition, frequency plan, use simulation for radio signal analysis and propagation. Developments, UMTS. Basic Desription and Conception of UMTS System, Network Architecture, Services. Exercises: Introduction to laboratory measurement. Test No.1 Test No.2 Credit. Laboratories: Introduction to the computer laboratory exercises No.1 and 2. Computer laboratory exercises No.1 - System for analysis and visualization of radio signal propagation above Earth's surface. Computer laboratory exercises No.2 - Coverage planning of GSM system. Introduction to the laboratory measurements No.1 and 2. Laboratory measurement No.1 - Testing mobile phones parameters. Laboratory measurement No.2 - Mobile networks parameters testing. Presentations. Presentations. The replacement date for the labs and measurement.
