Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Understand the principles of modelling and simulation of telecommunication networks. Learning outcomes are designed so that students are able to identify, apply and solve problems in modelling telecommunication networks.

Summary

Students will be familiar with the problems of queuing systems used in telecommunications. They also understand the issues of traffic load, state probability of queuing system, and Markov processes. Further, understand the significance of the 1st and 2nd Erlang equations and get a comprehensive overview of software for modeling and simulation of telecommunications networks. They learn to work with the most widely used tool in this area - Riverbed Modeler (OPNET).

Subject syllabus:

Lectures (1x14 days): 1. Queuing systems, Kendall classification, the traffic load 2. Markov processes, probability of queuing systems, 1st and 2nd Erlang formula 3. Basic of networks dimensioning, models for ensuring the Quality of Service (QoS). 4. Ensuring of Quality of Service (QoS) in IP, WLAN, and WWAN. QoE (Quality of Experience). 5. Simulation and modeling of telecommunications systems. Discrete Event Simulation (DES). 6. The comprehensive overview of simulation and modeling software tools for telecommunication systems. 7. Riverbed Modeler (OPNET) and OMNeT++ simulation tool used in telecommunications. Computer labs: 1. The content of exercises, familiarization with the software in lab EB317, safety in the laboratory. 2. Simulation of M/M/n queuing systém using Queuing ToolPak 4.0 (4 points) 3. Optimization of telephone exchange using Java Modeling Tools (4 points) 4. Simulation of M/M/n queuing system using SimEvents in MATLAB Simulink (4 points) 5. Simulation of LAN using Riverbed Modeler 6. Simulation of OSPF and RIP routing protocol using Riverbed Modeler (I.) 7. Simulation of OSPF and RIP routing protocol using Riverbed Modeler (II.) (6 points) 8. Simulation of IEEE 802.11g/n mixed mode, simulation of QoS in the WLAN using Riverbed Modeler (I.) 9. Simulation of IEEE 802.11g/n mixed mode, simulation of QoS in the WLAN using Riverbed Modeler (II.) (6 points) 10. Simulation of WWAN traffic using Riverbed Modeler (I.) 11. Simulation of WWAN traffic using Riverbed Modeler (II.) (6 points) 12. Optimization and dimensioning of the mobile radio network. 13. Test (14 points) 14. The additional term, credit.
