To understand transmission systems and methods of efficiency improvement in optical communications. To master linear and non-linear interactions between light and matter. To master selected SW tools for design of simple fiber optical networks.

Summary

Subject is concerned with: Circuits of optical transmitters, circuit solution of optical receivers, system ideas, digital systems, planning of digital optical communication systems, analog systems, multiplex in optical communications, coherent fiber optical communications systems, detection principles, practical solution, modulation data formats, demodulation principles and schematics, receiver sensitivity, raising of transmission capacities.

Lectures: 1. Light and its modulation. 2. Sources for optical communications. 3. Photodetectors and methods of optical signal processing. 4. Fiber optical waveguides. 5. Optical communication systems. 6. Light amplifiers and light modulators. 7. Multiplex in fiber optical systems. 8. Introduction to integrated optics. 9. Basic principles of nonlinear optics. 10.Soliton communications.
