Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The target of this subject is getting and mastering of knowledge, which enables good orientation in operations of power semiconductor converters and applications of power electronics, ability to individual analyzing and synthesis of power electronic systems. Gained pieces of knowledge make a part of general knowledge of electrical engineer, especially concentrated on applications of electronics.

Teaching methods

Summary

The subject focuses on the basic knowledge of operations of power semiconductor converters. It's supplemented by theory of power semiconductor devices. The prerequisites would be courses on basic electronics and basic theory of electrical circuits.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: Power semiconductor devices, diodes, thyristors, TRIACs. Power transistors, IGBTs. Special types of thyristors. Basic terms and relations in theory of power semiconductor converters. Power uncontrolled rectifiers and their applications. Power controlled rectifiers and their applications. Principles of control circuits for firing of controlled rectifiers. DC switches, principles of commutation circuits, the using of Gate-Turn-Off devices. DC/DC converters, circuits and their applications. Principles of control circuits for firing of DC/DC converters. Voltage-source inverters, their principles, circuits and applications. Current-source inverters, their principles, circuits and applications. Resonant pulse converters, their principles and applications. Indirect frequency converters, dual frequency converter and its applications. Direct frequency converters, cycloconverters. The controlling of output voltage and current of frequency converters. Operations of cycloconverters. AC voltage controllers, circuits and their applications. Principles of control circuits for firing of AC voltage controllers. Examples of the construction and design of converters, examples of applications. The development tendencies of power semiconductor systems. Exercises: Revision of electronics, opening to power electronics. Basic design of power semiconductor devices. Basic design of power semiconductor devices. Numerical examples of controlled and uncontrolled rectifiers. TEST No. 1. Semiconductor devices and power rectifiers. Numerical examples of commutation circuits of DC switches. Theory and numerical examples of voltage-source inverters. Analyse of cycloconvertor's operations. Analyse of AC current controllers. TEST NO. 2. DC/DC converters, voltage and current-source inverters. Practical demonstration of converters, their applications. Tuitions in chosen regions of power electronics. Laboratories: Laboratory exercises from controlled rectifiers (No.1.). Laboratory exercises from controlled rectifiers (No.2.). Laboratory exercises from DC/DC converters (No.3.). Laboratory exercises from voltage-source inverters (No.4.). Laboratory exercises from frequency converters (No.5.).
