Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with distributed control systems. The main accent insist on communication networks and their using in development of distributed control applications. The students also learn methodology of distributed control software design. After passing the course students have the main knowledge and skills with communication networks and with their using. Students are able to develop distributed control application and decide what type of distribution is good for certain system. After passing the course students have the main knowledge and skills with communication networks and with their use.

Summary

There is a strong new trend in automation today - using of distributed control systems instead of central systems. Distributed control systems consist of smaller control units connected by communication network. There is no need to have all signals connected to central system but control is distributed and runs directly in particular parts of technology. This is the reason, why we call such systems - distributed control systems. Lectures are attended to basics of theory of communication networks, used topologies, communication media, methodology of distributed control system design, distributed software design and using of basic industrial networks. Students work with main types of the communication networks at practical exercises in laboratories, they develop distributed control systems practically. There are used programmable controllers, industrial networks and development kits for communication networks in laboratories.

Lectures: Development from central hierarchical control systems to distributed control systems. Hardware and software equipment of distributed control systems. Relationship between system and subsystem. Communication in distributed control systems. Messages. Network architecture based on ISO/OSI model. Physical layer of ISO/OSI model. Communication standards RS232, RS485, RS422. Link layer of ISO/OSI model. Access methods to communication media. Network layer of ISO/OSI model. Network topology. Bus, ring topology. Networks interconnections. Local networks - Ethernet, Industrial Ethernet, protocols TCP/IP etc. Distributed control systems realization. Communication in distributed control systems. Industrial networks - ASI. Industrial networks - Profibus. Industrial networks - CAN, Lin. Industrial networks - Profinet, Ethernet Powerlink. Communication systems in building control. Presentation of individual projects. Laboratories: Safety rules in the laboratory. Excursion in the laboratory. Design of Simatic S7 1200 control application with ASI interface module. Finishing of design of Simatic S7 1200 control application with ASI interface module. Individual project 1. Design of distributed control system with Simatic S7 1500 and Profibus industrial network. Finishing of distributed control system with Simatic S7 1500 and Profibus industrial network. Individual project 2. Serial communication examples RS232, RS485.
