Understand the proposal of optical transmission routes. Learning outcomes are set so that the students are able to identify and apply tasks in the field of optoelectronics.

Summary

The transmission properties of the optical fibers create the content oh the subject. Further the connection and measurement of optical fiber and cables and the installation technology imagine the scope of subject.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: TRANSMISSION CHARACTERISTICS OF OPTICAL FIBERS. Attenuation. Metterial absorption in silica fibers. Linear scattering losses, Rayleigh scattering, Mie scattering, nonlinear scattering losses, stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering, bending losses. DISPERSION. Material, waveguide, modal dispersion. Modal noise, total dispersion, fibers with shifted and flat dispersion characteristic. POLARISATION AND NONLINEAR EFFECTS. Polarisation preserving fibers. OPTICAL FIBERS AND CABELS. Manufacturing of optical fibers and fluoride glasses. Types of optical fibers and measurement of optical and transmission properties of optical fibers. Stability of transmission parametres of optical fibers. Mechanical tension, OH-ion absorption. Prevention of the optical fibers. Conecting the optical fibers and cables. Connectors for optical fibers. Exercises: Work with optical fibers datasheets. Calculating the mechanical properties of optical fibers. Calculation of the attenuation of optical transmission path. Statistical evaluation of optical transmission measurements, measurement reports. Calculation of LASER beam properties. Calculation of LED and LD terminations. Optical fiber and LED or LD coupling.
