Understand the function of optical transmission routes. Learning outcomes are set so that the students are able to identify and apply tasks in the field of optoelectronics.

The subject gives an attention to optical detectors, optical amplifiers, how to project fiber optical communication systems, it describes coherent communication systems, WDM systems and soliton transmissions

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: OPTICAL DETECTORS. Si, Ge, AIIIBV materials. Semiconductor detectors of the PN junction type, PIN photodiode, detectors for the far IR region. Semiconductor detectors of the PN junction type, PIN photodiode, Si, Ge, AIIIBV alloys, phototransistors. Parameters of photodetectors. Sensitivity, quantum effectivity, noise, limiting wavelength, dynamical properties of photodetectors. OPTICAL RECEIVERS. Noises and thein influence. Receivers structures. OPTICAL AMPLIFIERS. Fiber amplifiers. OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS WITH INTENSITY MODULATION. Coding. Multichannel systems, distributed systems. TDM, FDM, WDM Coherent optical communications systems. Solitin optical communications systems. Exercises: Photodiode sensitivity calculation. Noise of detectors and receivers. Calculation of SNR and BER Receivers circuits and their design. Calculation of optical detectors parameters. Parameters of the passive parts of optical networks. Design of optical non-fiber network.
