Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The purpose of the course is to provide a common background for MS courses in control, communicastion, electronic circuits, filter design, digital signal processing. The course Signals and Systems II introduces discrete-time and digital signals and systems.

Teaching methods

Summary

The purpose of the course is to provide an advanced student basis in control, communicastion, electronic circuits, filter design, digital signal processing. The student will master the continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems. More information in the basic relation between characteristics of signals and systems is presented. Numerical analysis of both nonlinear continuous-time nonlinear and discrete-time system is introduced.The use of MATLAB is the prerequisite of work. The course covers the basic information in Image Analysis. This course is intended primarily for master degree students in electrical engineering at VSB TU FEI Ostrava. It is a subsequent course to the course Signals and Systems I.

Recommended literature:

Couch L.W.II: Digital and Analog Communications Systems. Macmillan, New York 1989.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

Verification of study: Student must work out two laboratory works. The first one is related to the analysis of the discrete-time signal, the second one is related to the analysis of the discrete-time system. Student can receive up to 10 points for each of works. Maximum number of points student can gain through tests is 2 * 10 = 20 points. Student has to elaborate two test. Student can acquire up to 10 points for each of them. Maximum number of points which student can gain through the tests is 2 * 10 = 20 points. Student can gain up to 20 + 20 = 40 points from the laboratory excercices. To pass the course student has to pass both the laboratory part of the course and the final exam. The final exam consists of writing part 0 - 50 points and oral part 0 -10 points. Student have to succeed in all parts of examination. Conditions for credit: Student must work out two laboratory works and two tests. To pass the laboratory part of the course student has to gain at least 20 points from the laboratory excercices.

Lectures: Introduction. MATLAB Signal Processing Toolbox. Application of Laplace transform I. Application of Laplace transform II. Transformation of random signal by LTIL system. Z-transform I. Z-transform II. System analysis in state space. Image analysis I. Image analysis II. Filters. IIR filter. Demonstration of filters. FIR filter. Demonstration of filters. Conclusion. Projects: Project No.1: Calculation of LTIL system response of initial state and time continuous input signal by Laplace transformation. Project No.2:Calculation of LTIL system response of initial state and time dicrete input signal by z-transformation. Computer labs: Introduction. MATLAB Signal Processing. Laplace transform. Partial fractions. Laplace transform. Theoretical solution. Laplace transform. Application of MATLAB. Test No.1. Z-transform. Introduction. Z-transform. Theoretical solution. Z-transform. Application of MATLAB. Test No.2. Filter design. IIR filter design. FIR filter design. Conclusion.
