Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The target of this course is to familiarize students with a design technology of the Embedded Control Systems, integrated in complex function blocks and final products. The contents of lectures and excersises is composed to improve the digital and microprocessor technique skills. The students will be able to choose apropriate hardware for solved task and then implement required control algorithms. They solves consequently the problems with power supply, supporting devices, reliability etc.

Summary

This course is engaged in the use of digital technique in control system applications. The possibilities of logical functions implementation in FPGA devices are discussed in particular lectures. Then the attention is aimed to microprocessor technique and architectures of various microprocessors are described: Freescale 68HC12, M68332, M-Core, Atmel AVR. The instruments supporting the digital devices are also described. These techniques include: communication, wireless communication, analog and digital I/O interfaces, power supply techniques, etc. The excersises are aimed to programming the microcontrollers, especially the Freescale 68HCS12, including the communication programming.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

Verification of study: 1 test and 1 individual project Conditions for credit: The student is classifying on base 1 test 0-10 points and individual project 0-30 points. Award of 14 th. week. Condition for receiving is min. 10 points, maximum of receiving points is 40. Examination - Writing part - Closing test - 0-50 points. Oral part 0-10 point. Total classification 51-100 points according study rules.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: Embedded Control Systems, basic specification, today´s trends. HW versus SW realization of logic functions - comparison. Programmable Logic devices PAL, GAL. The architecture of FPGA devices. The use of Freescale HC12 microcontroller in control systems. Architecture, programming model, memory subsystem, peripherals. CAN bus. Communication protocol description, features, usage possibilities. Communication buses LIN and I2C. Communication protocol description, features, usage possibilities. The use of Freescale M-CORE, M68332, Atmel AVR microcontrollers in embedded control systems. Architecture, programming model, memory subsystem, peripherals. Operating systems for embedded applications. Real-Time Operating Systems. Hardware for Digital Signal Processing. DSP processors, DSP applications in FPGAs. Communication in Embedded Control Systems. USB, FireWire, IR connection. Wireless communication in Embedded Control Systems. RF, DECT, Bluetooth, WiFi. Analog and Digital peripheral circuits of embedded control systems. The use of keyboard, LCD display and stepping motor. Semiconductor memories in Embedded Control Systems. Memory circuits, memory cards. Power supplies in Embedded Control Systems. Switching power supply, electrochemical cells, DC/DC converters. Exercises: Laboratories: Safety in laboratory. Familiarizing with development tools pro HCS12 controllers. Simple program in C - programming controller HCS12 using Codewarrior and USB Multilink. Input and output controlling. PWM output. Timer and interrupt control. Processor to peripherals onboard communication possibilities. Display and keyboard control. Analog signal processing features of the processor. A/D and D/A conversion. Digital systems communication. LIN bus. Digital systems communication. LIN bus. (cont.) Digital systems communication. CAN bus. Digital systems communication. CAN bus. (cont.) Digital systems communication. I2C bus, SPI. Using operating system in embedded control systems.
