Co-requisities

Subject has no co-requisities.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: The space of image signals. Operators. Linearity and shift invariance. Dirac delta function. Convolution. Discrete convolution. Applications of convolution in digital image processing. Image transforms. The Fourier transform, discrete Fourier transform, cosine transform. Properties of Fourier transform and its applications in digital image processing. Fast Fourier transform. Modifying the frequency spectrum of images. JPEG compression of images. MPEG compression of image sequences. Fractal compression. Wavelet transforms. Applications in digital image processing. Sampling and reconstructing images. Aliasing. Quantization. Transformations of brightness. Gamma correction. Histogram equalisation. Geometrical transformations of images. Morphing and warping. Filtering. Recursive and non-recursive filtering. Non-recursive filter design. Random fields and stochastic processes and their applications in digital image processing. Inverse filter. Wiener filter. Morphological image processing. Technical equipment for capturing and processing images. CCD cameras, scanners, frame grabbers. Software systems for processing images and image sequences. Computer labs: During the exercises, the students work out a series of practical tasks (convolution, Fourier transform, JPEG compression, transformations of brightness, geometrical transformations, filtering, Wiener filter). The tasks are prepared in the form of templates (pre-prepared programs) into which the sudents fill their own source code. In this way, they can focus on substantial and interesting issues. Furthermore, examples of comercially available systems for digital image processing are presented.
