Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

This subject aims to give students a basic understanding of computers hardware systems. Some of the systems are demonstrated on personal computers (easily accessible architecture)

Summary

The course concentrates on particular hardware components of computers. Their applications are demonstrated on implementation of personal computers. Further, micro-controllers are discussed too.

Subject syllabus:

Technology of integraded circuit production. Computer architecture by Von Neumann and harvard, basic features and functioning. Machine instruction, adressing, adressing spaces. Evaluation of computer performance. Principles of compunication with peripherals, I/O ports, programming control, interrupts, priorities. Controler, adapter, channel SCSI, DMA functioning. CISC and RISC procesors, basic features, pipelining, hop prediction. Typical RISC processors. Intel processors, history, basic features, internal architecture. Processors from other manufacturers, basic features, application area. Monolithic computers, construction requirements, features, typical peripherals. Atmel and Microchip microcontrolers. Architecture, features and programming. Memory organization in computers, memory hierarchy. Internal memory static and dynamic, virtual memory. External memories - magnetic, optic. Interface IDE SATA/PATA. Buses, signal clasification, bus cycle. Basic features of PCI, AGP, PCI-Ex. USB. Architecture of videoadaters. CRL, LCD, plasma and OLED displasys. PC architecture, parallel architectures SISD, SIMD, MISD, MIMD. High performance computing, DSP, FPGA.
