Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Po absolvování předmětu student - zná základní pojmy databázové technologie, umí je definovat, rozumí jim a na příkladech z reality je dovede vysvětlit, - umí provést datovou analýzu navrhovaného informačního systému tak, aby výsledná struktura databáze měla optimální vlastnosti, - umí vyhledávat jakékoliv informace z relační databáze v ní obsažené, a to jak procedurálně zformulováním vyhledávacího algoritmu, tak deskriptivně formulováním požadavků na vyhledávané informace, - umí provést funkční a dynamickou analýzu, - má přehlednou znalost o metodách fyzického ukládání informací v databázích.

Summary

An overview of database management. An architecture for a database system. The internal level, indexing, hashing, pointer chains. The logical level, entity-relationship model, ERD. Relational model. Domains, relations, relational integrity rules, relational databases. Relational algebra, calculus. SQL, QBE. Further normalization, functional dependence, first, second and third normal forms, Boyce-Codd normal form, decompositions. The network model, data definition, data manipulation.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: Bulk data processing tasks, their classical agenda solutions, shortcomings and problems of this solution. Database technology, database management systems, basic concepts. DBS architecture. Modelling Reality, the types of data models. Conceptual diagram, ER model, linear writing, graphic ERD, entity types, types of bonds, integrity constraints. Design conceptual scheme. Physical data organization: sequential files, chained organization, direct addressing, hashing. The index and indexed files, B-trees. Files with variable length of the sentence. Relational data model. Sessions, relational schema, representation of entities and relationships between entities. Relational algebra, relational calculus. SQL query language, data definition, data manipulation, searching for information. Query language SQL, views, transactions, database administration. QBE query language, searching for information. Proposed structure of relational databases, functional dependencies, normal forms, examples. Proposed structure of relational database decomposition and synthesis, examples of the full proposal database. Network data model, CODASYL standard. The scheme, sentences and sets, the implementation of different types of relationships. Network model, a language for data manipulation. Exercise: Repetition of basic notions of propositional logic and set theory Practical examples of identifying entities, attributes, relationships and their types Design a conceptual diagram, ERD, integrity constraints Design complete conceptual database schema Relational algebra operations, the formulation of information retrieval algorithms Search using index files, the use of indices for data manipulation The definition of trade in the SQL data manipulation, search More complex examples in SQL Search in the language QBE query to SQL conversion The relational model, functional dependencies Relational model, normal forms, algorithms for database design Network data model, information retrieval Projects: Individual treatment data analysis system, less information Documentation for data analysis
