Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Students will understand principles of computer networks mostly used today, gain ability to analyze network traffic, will understand most important protocols used in the Internet and will be able to design simple local area networks. They will also be able to orientate themself in options of LAN interconnections.

Summary

The course introduces basic principles and technologies of data networks. Students will understand basic data transmission principles, transmission media and methods of their sharing, basic protocols used to ensure reliable transmission, most frequently used network types and methods of networks interconnection. Introduction to protocols of most widely used Internet applications follows. Security issues of LANs and WANs are also discussed. In lab exercises students will learn how to design and implement simple secured network composed of basic active network devices and services.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

Verification of study: Tasks solved during exercises that verify students' ability to apply methods of computer network configuration in particular scenarios. Written tests during exercises which verify students' ability to describe and explain individual technologies and principles of computer networks. IP subnetting test which checks the ability to apply subnetting mechanism for particular given WAN. Semestral project for group of students - network design and configuration. The aim is to demonstrate students' ability to utilize theoretical knowledge for synthesis of particular solution.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: * Physics of data transmission. * Transmission media, methods of media sharing. Network topologies. * Methods of transmission channel sharing. * Reliable data transfer protocols. Today's link layer protocols. * ISO-OSI reference model. Interconnection of LANs. Network devices and their operation principles. * IEEE 802 networks. Ethernet. Switched networks. Virtual LANs. * Internet protocols: TCP/IP protocol family. IPv6, NAT * Routing and routing algorithms. * DNS: principles, protocols and configuration. * Protocols of Internet services. * Computer networks security. * Wireless LANs and WANs - IEEE 802.11, 802.15. * Network System Services (Syslog, NTP protocol, AAA servers). * Introduction to Advanced Technologies of Computer Networks Laboratories: * Lab guidelines, simple network, network settings in OS. * Structured wiring systems. * Simple protocols of reliable transmission. * Practical network implementation. * Switched networks. Virtual networks. * IP addressing - subnetting, NAT. * TCP/IP protocol analysis. * DNS configuration. * Static and dynamic routing - implementation of routed network. * TCP and UDP. BSD Sockets. * Analysis of Internet application protocols. * Configuration of packet filtering. * IPv6 * WiFi network - configuration of APs and client stations. Projects: Design of secured WAN including network services.
