The goal is to provide basic orientation in a very broad issue of data compression.

Summary

The following topics are discussed: Theory of information, modeling and coding, Huffman coding, arithmetics coding, Dictionary techniques, LZ77. LZSS, LZ78, LZFG, LZW, LZMW, LZAP approach, vector quantization. wavelet-based coding.

Lectures: Information and coding. Information content of the message. Information Units. Entropy. Statistical compression methods. Huffman compression. Arithmetic compression. Arithmetic compression with integer numbers. PPM compression methods. Dictionary methods. LZ77. LZSS, LZ78, LZFG, LZW, LZMW, LZAP compression methods. Predictive coding. Burrows-Wheeler transformation. Mathematical foundations of lossy compression methods. Scalar quantization. Vector quantization. Compression based on wavelet transformation. JPEG2000. Video compression. Compression and searching. Word-based compression methods. Standards. MPEG-4, MPEG-7.
