Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The course acquaints the students with the foundations of image analysis. After passing the course, the student will understand the principles of the selected method of image segmentation and image analysis and will be able to implement them.

Summary

The following topics are discussed: Image segmentation. Detecting edges, regions, corners. Measuring objects. Pattern recognition based on classification. Using neural networks for pattern recognition. Reconstructing 3D scenes. Processing images varying in time. Object tracking. The cource includes the computer labs in which the computer programs are realised corresponding to the mentioned topics.

Lectures: 1. Detecting edges in images. Gradient methods. 2. Zero-crossing methods. Parametric edge models. 3. Canny edge detector. 4. Thresholding. Optimal threshold selection. Adaptive thresholding. 5. Image segmentation based on region growing and splitting. Heuristic edge following. 6. Hough transform. Detecting feature points (corners). 7. Measuring objects. Selecting and computing the features for recognition. 8. Evaluating the efficiency and optimisation of the set of selected features. 9. Classification based on discriminant functions. Probabilistic approach to determining the discriminant functions. Classification based on etalons. 10. Classification based on the neural networks; multi-layer neural networks. 11. Scene reconstruction from its two or more images. Camera calibration. Processing the depth data. 12. Correspondence problem and some approaches how it can be solved. 13. Analysis of time-varying images. Optical flow. 14. Object tracking. Kalman filtering. Computer labs: 1. Edge detection. Gradient. 2. Edge detection. Zero-crossing methods. Parametric edge models. 3. Thresholding. Optimal threshold selection. Edge linking. 4. Hough transform. 5. Image indexing. 6. Measuring objects. Computing moments. 7. Measuring objects.
