Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

After passing the course, student will be able to process spatial data and will be able to be familiar in basic tasks connected to the area of geographic information systems. The student will learn how to acquire, analyze, and present data. The student will know methods of spatial data analysis on current problems from areas of remote sensing, traffic, and government.

Summary

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) represent area that is widely used in many present applications. The aim of the course is to get familiar with methods of obtaining, processing, and analyzing data in GIS. Techniques of processing the most common types of spatial data, analytical tools and techniques of their analysis, and not least ways to visualize in GIS will be introduced. Raw data processing will be shown following their analysis, storing, and final visualization to the end user. The course will also handle techniques to visualize data on the Internet.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: 1. Basics of GIS, concepts and history of GIS, coordinate systems, transformations between coordinate systems, commonly used Czech and worldwide systems. 2. Representation of spatial data, spatial models. 3. Raster representation of spatial data (pixel, voxel, TIN, quadtree). 4. Vector representation of spatial data (planar map, algorithms to operate planar map). 5. Algorithms for vector data management (planning, computing a shortest path). 6. Methods of remote sensing of Earth, presentation of active and passive systems. 7. Geocoding and georeferencing algorithms. 8. Spatial data representation in relational database (Spatial SQL). 9. Visualization of geographic data (3D visualization, visualization on the Internet). 10. Global positioning systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo), technical implementations, usage and applications. Labs: 1. LIDAR data processing. Raw data extraction. 2. LIDAR data processing. Preparation for visualization. 3. Extracting points for georeferencing in LIDAR data. 4. Merging of LIDAR and secondary data. 5. Shortest path in a traffic network. 6. Working with spatial data in relational database (Spatial SQL). 7. Visualization of spatial data and operations on data stored in relational database using QGIS. 8. Visualization of spatial data on the Internet. Preparation of database and data transform. 9. Creation of a simple application. 10. Credit.
